WATER, GRANDKID, BUT NOT MUCH WIND

Perfect for a 3 Y.O. to learn to steer. When we went out there was next to no wind so we motored to Pensacola Bay before setting sail. She had been watching to much Dora the Explorer and thought you had to saw the wheel. She took correction well and after a few minutes had only a moderate snake wake.

We call these calm conditions the “Curse of Anis” (my son-in-law) He has been out in the boat at least a half dozen times including a trip to Destin, and never sailed, always motored in calm conditions. The wind finally picked up to about 12 knots, he got to sail and the grandkid did very well steering under sail. Better than motoring. We started heading back to the pier around 2 PM The wind started a slow death. By the time it was time to take in the sails, the wind was down to 3 knots and we were making more speed from the tide then sailing.

It was a perfect day to introduce a young one to the joys of sailing. Even with her less then lengthy attention span, she enjoyed the boat and tolerated the life jacket. 2 years ago she did not like the life jacket at all.

I look forward to many fine years of sailing with my granddaughter.

GRANDKID COMING HOME

Yep. My world traveling granddaughter is coming home the end of this week. That meant spring cleaning, or something like that. That was not necessarily for the granddaughter, but more for the daughter. Its some female thing. Now with the son-in-law, just make a good martini or two and life is good. They should be staying in the area till he get a job. I pray for them that goes quick.

I have to admit I did detailed their jeep that I have been taking care of for the last year and a half. That is a gearhead thing.

The weather was good, other than a little foggy on Sunday. The temp was perfect. This is my kind of winter. I know it is still January, but every warm day is one day closer to summer.

The granddaughter wants to sail. That will be interesting. The last visit, she hated her lifejacket to the point of abandoning ship. She will be 4 in May, so I hope the age helps her understand some of the facts of life. Plus it is not 90 degrees out. That helps. Grandpa need a solid female sailor in his camp. Could be an interesting month.

SPORTS WEEKEND

Not really, but what can I say. Every team I was routing for lost. So much for football and my alumni in basketball.

This was also my wife’s birthday weekend…, she says. Actually, it is Tuesday. Her initials are MLK and her birthday is always plus or minus that Monday off. She plays it to the hilt. Therefore, Saturday she wanted to go to see Warhorse. I was surprised, it was a good movie., even for me. The mate only sniffled at the end.

Sunday we were going to anchor over in Big Sabeen. No water, the mate did not want to go and the people we were going with did not want to go. So much for that plan. It was also going to be chilly. The days are getting longer, so spring is coming, water is coming.
