IKE, TAKE A HIKE September 11, 2008

Yea, that’s another hurricane. Going to Texas Saturday early A.M. Hate it when they come at night. Your senses can not get enough info to give you good knowledge. That lack of what is really going on gives you more fear then you need. Hurricanes generate enough fear. Even a cat 1 makes you think that maybe you made the wrong decision. I always say hurricanes are better, they give you a week to plan your escape. Tornadoes do not. What a lot of people forget is that the feeder bands produce many tornadoes. Many are small and short lived, but amazingly strong.

Right know Ike is about on the Alabama/Mississippi state line and heading WNW. Believe it or not, this is worse for us than Gustave, a week ago. We have much more water. The wind is less and blowing out of the east 15-20 knots. If you look at Gustave pictures, imagine the water 4-6 inches higher. That takes it to the roots of the big pine trees. The storm has huge waves with it considering it is so far south of us. It has breached the island which Pensacola Beach is on in 2 places. We are past high tide and I hope it is starting to recede. The problem is the wind is shifting to the SE which will blow more water in to the bay. I am not expecting it
to go down much before low tide at 8 this evening.

The weekend looks great and I am going sailing. I have half my sails on, now need a few calm hours to get the other 2 up.

There is a new low out there just west of the Southern Bahamas. The computer models go all over. I will worry about it Monday.
